RSS Feed Changes

In an effort to get setup with micro.blog, the RSS feed is changing. I’ve disconnected feed.press and reverted back to WordPress’ handling of my feed.

The feed link in the menu bar should still work, but if you were using the feed.press link, it will no longer update after this post.

For the kids in the back, use this feed

Read it now before it’s gone

Information on the web is fleeting. Nothing lives forever. Servers go offline. Hard drives crash. Bills don’t get paid. Accidental deletions occur. The web is not forever.

So are the links we pass back and forth. Links may be relevant when they’re shared. But not a week later. What about a month from now? Is the thing even still true or relevant? What about next year? That post may be gone. The site could be history.

Why keep all of this digital cruft around? What I write is important to me because it’s mine. I made it. I wrote it. I shared it. It’s a part of me. But my comments on what others have said are not the same thing. They’re interesting. They might inspire me to post. But most of what I’ve considered sharing in the past aren’t going to last.

And I don’t want my site to be a statue of things I once thought were interesting. I don’t want it to be littered with dead links to things that no longer matter.

So I’m going to experiment with sharing some links that expire after a time. Maybe a week. Maybe a day. Maybe a few days. I haven’t picked the right amount of time. Some might even live on eternally.

It’s an experiment. This is my trench and I’m the tech who lives here.

Barbarians at the gates

Recently, the share server this blog sits on was compromised and code was injected into this site’s pages. I have cleaned the infection and I am sorry this has happened. I am taking steps to put greater security in place.
The blog is now clean but I am keeping an eye on it over the next few days to assure it stays that way. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, please let me know

May: 31 Days of Words

May.

In the coming month, I am going to branch out a bit from purely technical issues. I am still wrestling with how much of myself I want on this blog and how much might be better served elsewhere. However, until I figure that out and make a decision you are stuck with me. All of me. The techy me. The emotional me. The Full Carl Experience.

I settled on the name Tech in the Trenches as a name for this site for two reasons. The first was that I am that tech in the trenches of IT Support day in and day out and I wanted to share my experiences, finds, workarounds and information I’ve come across and consider useful to my job. The second meaning is that I am the tech and my life is the trenches.

For the month of May, I am going to post something new everyday. It may be completely brand new and typed by me that day or it might be an older post from my old blog.

I decided I did not want to move over everything from my old space into this one. Instead I am hand-picking an reposting and in some cases updating the more interesting and still relevant items.

So for the month of May, it is my goal to have something new up on this site every, single day. Starting tomorrow morning, there will be something inside your RSS feed that will either enlighten, inform or entertain you.

It may be about technology. It may be about my life. It could be any number of things. I hope you like what you see and stick around to see where the month takes us.

Thank you for taking the time to read my humble words and take an interest in what I am doing.

Enjoy May!
